The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Bed Base or Frame

Updated: Feb 2, 2022

Sleep is important, and a bed frame is the foundation that a good night’s sleep is built upon. But what makes a good bed frame? In fact, the answer is a lot of different things, including functional design, the way it fits into your home and lifestyle, and it can simply be the way it looks. Below, we run through these factors to help you decide on the perfect bed frame for your bedroom.

Slats & Platform Bed Frames

There are two main types of bed frame designs you can choose from:

Slat Base

A slatted base is a base that uses horizontal slats across the frame for the mattress to sit on. This allows for maximum airflow around your mattress which will keep it in good condition. The slats are typically removable as well which allows for disassembly for moving or slat replacement if one becomes damaged. This is all good news for the longevity of your bed frame.

Slat bases will utilize one of two styles of slats; fixed or flexible. Fixed slats are rigid with no give to them and are the more affordable option, while flexible slats do have some give which results in a springier feel to your bed.

Platform Base

A platform base has a flat board across the frame for the mattress to sit on, and there are some distinct advantages here too. The main benefit the potential for additional storage options for your bedroom. Some platform beds, (like our Prestige lift up base) have a liftable platform, or even drawers built into them, which can be a lifesaver if you have run out of standard storage options in your bedroom. Because let’s face it – when it comes to storage, you can never have enough. #ApartmentDwellersRejoice

Bed Frame Size & Logistics

It may seem obvious but making sure your bed base will fit in your room is a must when searching for a bed frame. Take the time to measure out your room and keep in mind the space that will be taken up by other furnishings such as bedside tables, drawers, and side tables.

Not only that but you also want to make sure you can get your bed base in the room in the first place! Check whether your bed frame will fit through your doorways. Luckily, slats beds can often be disassembled, and double platform beds can sometimes come in two parts for ease of transport.

Bed Base Aesthetics & Styles

You also want to invest in a bed base that is going to match the aesthetic of your bedroom and home. You can choose from tall or low heights, wood or plastic on the legs, thick or thin profiles, and so on. Just make sure you take your time and browse the options available to compare them with the furnishings you already have.

For example, low sitting, fabric covered designs such as Scandi’s mattress base can look fantastic in a minimalist bedroom style, due to the understated wooden legs. For a bolder, taller version you could get the Kitset Base 34, a classic base that could suit almost any room’s décor. Trust your personal style, as what makes a good bed frame can be subjective when it comes to aesthetics.
